K. Paul Katayama, M.D., Ph.D., Director
The Advanced Institute of Fertility's director, K. Paul Katayama, M.D., Ph.D., is board certified in Obstetrics & Gynecology and Reproductive Endocrinology. He is a Clinical Professor at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine. Dr. Katayama is a graduate of the University of Tokyo Medical School and completed his residency and fellowship training at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland. His extensive training and experience also includes 10 years of collaborative research with the pioneering Drs. Howard and Georgeanna Jones, who established America's first IVF program at the Jones Institute.
Dr. Katayama has extensive specialized experience in laparoscopy and microsurgery. Dr. Katayama is the author of over 70 published articles in his field. His long track record of consistently successful patient care has been responsible for a number of "infertility milestones " including Wisconsin's first frozen embryo baby; first selected assisted hatching pregnancy (SAH); first pregnancy by partial zona dissection (PZD); first sister-to-sister donated oocyte pregnancy; first gestational surrogacy pregnancy; first microsurgical epididymal sperm aspiration pregnancy (MESA); first percutancous epididymal sperm aspiration pregnancy (PESA), and the Midwest's first pregnancies by intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), blastocyst embryo transfer, and gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT) done in the office suite.
Three times voted by Southeastern Wisconsin physicians as the area's foremost expert in infertility, Dr. Katayama has dedicated his personal and professional skills to helping couples realize their dream of having a baby.
Adolf Stafl, M.D., Ph.D.
Our physician associate, Adolf Stafl, M.D., Ph.D., is board certified in Obstetrics & Gynecology. He is an internationally recognized expert in cervical cancer detection and in the treatment of precancerous lesions. He received his M.D. and Ph.D. from Charles University in Prague, Czechoslovakia. While working at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, he introduced colposcopy to the United States, pioneered the laser treatment for cervical lesions, and invented cervicography. He served as a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Medical College of Wisconsin for 31 years.

As evidenced by our program's many "infertility milestones" and consistently impressive pregnancy rates, our expert embryologists contribute the masterful application of the advanced laboratory techniques necessary to ensure success. Our skilled fertility nursing staff provides individualized, nurturing care delivered with clinical expertise. Our experienced team of nurses undergo continuing education to enhance their clinical skills, as well as their understanding of the emotional and psychological aspects of infertility care and treatment. These dedicated nursing professionals are involved and accessible every day of the week. The Institute's staff also includes experienced technicians who provide specialized endocrine, andrology, and cytogenetics laboratory services; financial coordinators experienced in infertility costs and insurance issues; and a team of courteous and professional medical secretaries skilled in navigating our patients through their program participation in a manner that helps make their experience a positive one.
